Marble Sculptures
We carve in marble, granite and limestone, roughing with CNC where it saves the client money and finishing entirely by hand, because the last two millimetres are what the eye reads. Blocks are selected for the piece, and the vein direction is set against the form before any stone is cut.

About marble sculpture
Stone is unforgiving in a way the cast and fabricated materials are not: there is no filling a mistake. That is why block selection comes first. A block is chosen for size, for soundness, and for the direction of its veining relative to the finished form — a vein running across a slender element is a future break.
Roughing is done by CNC on most commissions. It is faster and it wastes less stone, and it makes no difference to the finished surface because the machine is stopped well short of the final form. Everything after that is chisel and rasp.
Marble weathers. In a clean climate it will hold detail for centuries; in acid rain or a salt wind it will soften, and polished surfaces go matt first. For an exposed site we will usually recommend granite for the same form, and say so before the block is bought.
