Big-cat subjects sit awkwardly between the naturalistic and the abstract, and the interesting work is usually the piece that commits fully to one or the other. This set is organised that way: faceted plate forms first, then modelled work, then pieces that abstract the animal to a gesture.

Faceted plate is the dominant contemporary approach and there are good reasons beyond fashion. Plate can be profiled from a digital model with no tooling cost, the facets create their own shadow lines so the form reads at distance without surface detail, and in corten the uneven early oxidation across the facets gives a depth that a smooth surface does not achieve.

Modelled work in this subject is almost always cast rather than fabricated, because the musculature is the point and plate cannot describe it. That moves the piece into a different budget band and a different programme — twenty-two weeks rather than twelve — and it changes the maintenance picture from nothing at all to an annual wax.

Mirror-finish big cats are the hardest to place well. The reflection breaks up the silhouette, which is the opposite of what most of these forms are trying to do, and in a landscape setting the piece can read as a bright shape rather than an animal. Where they work is against a plain architectural backdrop at close viewing distance.

Practical notes across the set. Standing forms at 2.4 to 3 metres suit civic and campus placement; reclining forms at 1.1 to 1.4 metres flank steps and terrace edges without dominating. Anything with a raised paw or an extended tail needs the appendage engineered rather than fabricated, and anything a child can reach needs the tail radiused at the tip.
